So what was the verdict? Is criticism dead?

Yes, a certain kind of criticism is dead.

The era of Foucault, Deleuze and Derrida - thinkers he both respects and is critical of. That era Eagleton thinks is over.

So he's really just plugging After Theory then, isn't he?
From my vantage point, Derridean-style close reading seems to be dying out, but Deleuzean-influenced analyses of space, the image, politcs, etc. still seem to be fairly pervasive. Foucault is still hanging around, though not as visibly. But with academia needing to perpetuate itself, I'm sure there will be a full-blown renaissance of these writers in a year or two.
