For a long time I rooted for Minnesota teams, but they keep getting rid of their good players so now I root for players. Thus I am a Mets/Celtics follower this year. Looks good so far. I think Celtics against Lakers in the NBA finals. The first time I came to the US, the spring of 86, I watched a final between Lakers and Celtics, so it's like a return to the disaster for me.
I've even nearly convinced Joyelle to be a Mets-iste. Which is quite a feat considering her entire extended family is rabidly Red Sox (the two most commonly seen pictures in the homes of her family: family member + world series trophy and grampa McSweeney + JFK circa 1961).

The Mets are a non-sympathetic Darth Vader to the Braves not-as-annoying Rebel Alliance!
Though I do like David Wright an awful lot and I hope that one day when Chipper Jones hits the DL one too many times, we steal Wright from the Mets.
I'm originally from Minnesota, so I'm a Twins fan, but I moved to northeastern Connecticut when I was about 12, so the Red Sox are a big draw for me as well. As far as Mets fandom, I don't really care as long as people aren't rooting for the Yankees. Though I have to say, it's pretty sad these days to have to root for any NL team, since it is a pretty inferior league. As far as teams I really want to root for, the Mariners have always interested me, but I don't think I can really get invested without living in Seattle.
Oh, and about the Braves, I have to hate them because of the annoying tomahawk chop/chant that persisted and became a minor cultural meme during the 1991 World Series against the Twins. Not to mention the fact that they're kind of the Yankees of the South. But, I absolutely love the trio of Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, and Greg Maddux. Tom Glavine is easily my all-time favorite pitcher, and he continues to impress me even in old age now that he's lost velocity and must run a tight mental game against batters in order to get outs. I heard he was only recently put on the disabled list for the first time in his entire career. Just an amazing athlete.
True, Ramon Castro's walk-up music is the Imperial March. But the death star is in the Bronx, dude.
Come up to Shea for a Braves game sometime. You'll love it when the shouts of "LAAAAAAAAAA-RRY" make your third baseman comment on a blog.
The MVP fight this year is between Wright and Utley, no way around it.
The Lakers? Really? I mean, the entire Western Conference has ridiculous strong teams. But I'll say Boston will win the Finals, on account that the WC play-offs will be emotionally draining.
Meanwhile, I am somewhat rooting for the Rockets.

A lot of folks hate the Braves, and to be fair, a lot of folks I know hate that stupid tomohawk chop. It had a moment, but there's certainly no reason to keep doing it.
Also, Max, to be Republican for three seconds: Braves = America's Team. You not liking the Braves = You not liking America, and I'll be damned if we're going to make Johannes' comment space a hotbed of Anti-American sentiment.

Pretty much anywhere I move, I will NOT become a fan of their baseball team, though I do fear a move to the Northeast will cause my already thriving like of the Red Sox to bloom fully. We shall see...
