Final day to register in Indiana is October 6th.
It's funny so much is being talked about this or that debate. The most important factor to the outcome of the election is how many people the Democrats manage to register and how many Republicans manage to disempower. This should really be the key discussion in this election. In Michigan the Republicans are engaged in a severe campaign to keep people from voting. In Indiana there are 700 volunteer lawyers to keep people voting.

To add to this---in Florida you can volunteer to help monitor elections. I expect to see a lot of what we saw in 2000 down here.
When I called the supervisor of elections here to change my address for voting I was also able to change Craig's address. I just told them that he was my husband. I was shocked that there was no verification process---esp. since he isn't "officially" my husband yet.
That's absolutely true - the debate is a dog and pony show, the real action will be re whether the dems can stop the retubs from disenfranchising their way to victory.
Disgraceful.
I have no doubt that Karl Rove & Co. will find a way to keep people from voting. That's how they roll. What they can't physically keep from voting they attempt to make elections "not matter" and keep people psychologically out of the game. Might not work as well this election, but they'll find a way, I promise.
So where's the dems' Rove? Is that supposed to be Carville?
Jordan,
That might be the problem.
If I've got a problem then a problem's got a problem...
Having said that, it seems the Democrats really have their act together in Indiana - even if in the end it doesn't "flip."
Even if the dems put up a good fight in Indiana and end up losing, it still makes McCain divert funds to a state he was sure he would win outright.
The same thing is apparently happening in North Carolina, too. Obama may actually be able to carry the state, but even if he doesn't, McCain has to drain funds fighting for it.
At the end of the day, Obama is at least going to pick up Colorado, Iowa, New Mexico, and Virginia, 4 states that the republicans won in 2004. On the other hand, the republicans don't stand to pick up a single state that they dems won in 2004. Even if the republicans get Ohio and Florida, if Obama picks up those 4 new states, plus all the others they are projected to win, Obama beats McCain with 286 electoral votes.
I'm sorry, but I don't even think this is going to be close. I predict 300+ electoral votes for Obama. He's closing in on McCain in too many formerly red states not to win at least a couple of them.
I don't want to be too optimistic (the republicans alwyas have tricks up their sleeve) but I think the bailout failure is a sign of republicans fleeing like rats from the sinking boat and starting their neo-gingrich stance as outsider party.
Yeah, honestly I've felt the same way for going on a couple months now. Developments thus far have only bolstered my confidence in this stance.
I really think that McCain is a 2008 version of Bob Dole in 1996, just an elder statesman who has nothing to lose by taking a big beating from the other party and handing over the election to them. Picking a virtual unknown for VP strikes me as a particularly egregious sign of this underlying defeatism. She has basically no reputation to tarnish, unlike Romney and others who will be promising candidates for the republicans in future presidential elections. I feel like McCain essentially gave up when he selected Palin. There is no other reason he could have had. For the first week, everybody thought that maybe it would prove to be a shrewd political maneuver, but that suspicion hasn't borne out in the past 3 weeks, and with each passing day, she looks like a bigger and bigger mess.
I think McCain's only object at this point is to do so much crazy, senile shit that people will forget about Bush. He's basically trying to burn down the image Bush built over the past 8 years so a new party can rise from the ashes and be competitive in the future.
