OK, now I "get" the gurlesque and the association between cuteness and the grotesque. Lara's essay is wonderful.
I'm reminded, too, of classics, such as Alice in Wonderland (Alice and her animals are as grotesque as they are cute), as well as anime and manga. Also the "injured doll" fetish.
"Cuteness, then, far from being a harmless aesthetic category, reveals a state of acute deformity."
