Greatest Movie of All-Time

is of course Cocteau's Orpheus.

But here is the insight of the day. Joyelle and I watched briefly Vh1's "Best Songs of the 80s" and my brilliant wife pointed out the important fact that A-Ha's video for "Take on Me" (talk about translatese) is a kind of remake of Cocteau's film. That had never occurred to me, sadly, embarrassingly.

You are factually incorrect, sir. The greatest movie of all time is Wilder's "Sunset Blvd."

Wrong again. #18 is "Forrest Gump."

That's number one on my most hated movies list! (Another, admittedly related, list.)

Anyone who says otherwise is mentally challenged.

Eh, "Forrest Gump" is knowing, purposeful shlock though. I have a hard time hating it for what it proudly purports to be.

It's funny, though. I tried to watch "Benjamin Button," mostly because I don't have regular access to film in Korea, and because I live outside the US, I didn't see any of the advertising blitz for it, so I had literally no idea what it was about. Anyway, I made it like 10 minutes into the movie before I decided that this was just "Forrest Gump" redux. I went to IMDB, and lo and behold, it turns out it was written by the same guy. Needless to say, I didn't have to watch any more.

But even that movie pretty much is what is purports to be ... a generational melodrama with an implausible--and therefore touching!--supernatural element.

A movie like "Boondock Saints," on the other hand, which is touted by lame undergrads everywhere as a "complex" examination of vigilantism, religion, etc. really deserves the #1 spot on most-hated lists worldwide. I can't think of a more hamfisted, embarrassing movie for a person to claim they like.
